About West Tampa, FL
West Tampa is located west of the city of Tampa and the Hillsborough River. It is the oldest district that is officially within the city limits. West Tampa was founded in 1892 by a Scottish immigrant named Hugh MacFarlane. He built a streetcar and bridge that connected West Tampa with the surrounding area. This brought an influx of people from those surrounding areas includeing: Channel District, and Downtown Tampa, which helped the city thrive and grow.
Although they're not there today, a macaroni factory and a cigar factory used to exist in West Tampa. To learn more about these factories, as well as other workplaces that no longer exist, visit the local library. There is plenty of information there about the city's history and the people who worked hard to build it. Most of West Tampa is full of residential areas today. The neighborhoods are manicured, quiet and serene.
To enjoy some of the city's history firsthand, visit the West Tampa Historic District. There are 908 historic buildings within the 273 acres that make up the area. This area is a great place for a family vacation. There is a family fun center with a bowling alley, arcades and various games. West Tampa hosts several festivals, live musical performances and dances. The city's community calender is a good resource for finding up-to-date information about these events.
To pay tribute to the city's founder, there is a park nearby called MacFarlane Park. There are plenty of beautiful trees, plants and flowers to see. The park also houses Freedom Playground, which was the first playground in the Tampa area to be classified as universally accessible. Children of all ages, regardless of their physical abilities, are able to enjoy the playground's accessible features and play together. Other POI's include: MacDill Airforce Base, and Tampa International Airport, and University of Tampa.
